The Orientation Team is looking for new leaders for the upcoming summer to lead freshmen in their New Student Orientations.
According to the director’s staff of the Orientation Team, or O-Team, leaders will represent the University by facilitating groups of interested and incoming freshman through their introductions to campus, and, in turn, bridging the gap between high school and college.
Business junior J’Lynn Cravanas, one of the O-Team directors, commented on the importance of O-Team Leaders for students.
“You’re the very first friend that every university student makes,” Cravanas said. “Your job is to really get them excited, to get them information and to really get them excited about the University.”
At an informational session, the directors commented on what it takes to be an O-Team Leader. With an enthralling schedule of meetings, events, small groups and even power naps, flexibility, endurance, accountability and open-mindedness were just a few of the desired qualities discussed.
“These are the things that we look for our O-Team participants to embody or strive to embody,” said O-Team Director and American Sign Language and Interpreting junior Lawren Kimble.
Additionally, O-Team Leaders are required to work early mornings and late nights, with constantly changing workdays, said the O-Team directors. However, benefits of the summer employment include impacting students, priority registration, monetary compensation, free summer housing and networking opportunities.
Deaira Moore-Florence, an interested human development and family studies junior, attended the meeting in hopes to continue the Sam Houston State University O-Team legacy she just recently transferred from.
“It was honestly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” Moore-Florence spoke of her O-Team Leader experience. “It was 7 a.m. to 11 at night, but it’s literally the most fun—you get to meet all these students and all the people on your team…It’s definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made in college.”
