Skip the small talk: Try these 20 questions instead

Lily Huynh/The Cougar

The people you walk this campus with form an irreplaceable part of your college experience. Don’t just pass them by.  However, getting to know them in the first weeks of school can feel pretentious at best and transactional at worst.

The conversations never seem to deviate from some permutation of “what’s your name?” and “what are you majoring in?”

But for those left unsatisfied by the mundane small talks that never gets any deeper than the surface, rest assured that there are (many) better options in store. Here’s a list of some conversation starters — and not just for freshmen!

  1. Are you watching any good movies or tv shows right now?
  2. Have you gotten lost on your way to class yet?
  3. What class are you most excited for? Which one are you least excited for?
  4. What campus events are you planning to attend this week?
  5. Are you planning on attending any football games?
  6. How terrible was your commute this morning?
  7. How long did it take you to pick out an outfit this morning?
  8. Do you like your roommates so far?
  9. Are you from the Houston area?
  10. Do you have any student organizations that you’re planning to join?
  11. Is your best friend going to UH with you?
  12. Are you hoping to have more independence from your family or stay close to them in college?
  13. Are you planning to find a job on campus?
  14. What are you the most stressed about right now?
  15. Are you hoping to pick up any new hobbies in college?
  16. Have you felt homesick yet?
  17. I love your shoes/jewelry/bag/clothes. Where did you get it?
  18. Have you considered participating in Greek life on campus?
  19. Do you plan to stick with your current major, or are you still exploring?
  20. Has college so far been like how you thought it would be?
