No. 14 Houston Cougars look to extend their winning streak as they travel to Salt Lake City to face the No. 10 Utah Utes on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 9:15 PM.
The Cougars currently hold an overall series record against the Utes of 5-0. The two teams last faced off on Oct. 26, 2024, at TDECU Stadium, with the score being 17-14, and they first met on Dec. 3, 1966, in Houston, with the Cougars winning 34-14.
The Houston Cougars recently extended their winning streak to four as they defeated Oklahoma State, 35-32, in a sold-out TDECU Stadium with fifth-year quarterback Conner Weigman slinging the football to his teammates.
Conner finished the game throwing for a career high of 343 yards and tying his career high of five touchdowns, establishing him as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
“I thought Conner got better as the game progressed,” said Head Coach Willie Fritz in a post-game conference on Oct. 17.
The Utah Utes came off with a win against Colorado, 27-24, as they struggled a bit in the third quarter, letting Colorado get 17 points over their seven. Nonetheless, Utah remains undefeated with their record being 6-0 as they look to continue their winning streak against the Cougars.
Senior quarterback Devon Dampier led the Utah offense, throwing for 278 yards and getting three touchdowns, but also leaving with two interceptions.
“We just gotta keep our nose down and stay home,” said senior defensive back Will James on any improvements going forward in a post-game conference on Oct. 17.
With both teams looking to continue their winning streaks, this game has all the likelihood of being close, as Conner is coming off of his Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Senior wide receiver Amare Thomas and fifth-year wide receiver Trent Walker will also be major players to look at against Utah as these two players have allowed the Houston offense to move downfield through the air consistently, especially against Oklahoma State.
Houston will also be playing in a new altitude, as Salt lake City will give the Cougars a different environment that they haven’t played in since 1977. Since the Cougars haven’t played multiple games in that area, the low oxygen levels could be a major challenge that the team will have to overcome if they want to beat the Utes.
