The 62nd Student Government Association met Sept. 9 to address student transit initiatives and fill vacant Senate seats.
Cullen College of Engineering: New senator appointed
The Senate welcomed a new senator to represent the Cullen College of Engineering following a nearly unanimous vote.
Computer information systems senior Enifome Ebe highlighted in her speech her intention to bridge the divisions within Cullen and prioritize consistent communication across the entire engineering community.
“I don’t want people to assume that because I’m an engineering student that my experience represents everyone,” Ebe said. “I want students to feel heard and listened to. I want students to feel like they can come to me about anything.”
Seats for College of Liberal Arts and Social Science, C.T Bauer College of Business, College of Pharmacy, College of Optometry and Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine still remain vacant.
Following the removal of three senators, Vice President Ian Kariuki informed the administration that the Senate currently stands at 12 members.
HEB shuttle
Kariuki presented progress on a planned HEB shuttle route set to launch this month. This issue aims to solve the grocery access issue for students given limited funds for ride share programs like Uber or Lyft.
After the bill was introduced to further the initiative of the student shuttle to HEB, the Senate voted for its passing unanimously.
However, proposed legislation that would have provided students with LinkedIn Learning access and Canva integration failed to pass. Senators expressed concern that the resources would be better framed in a more direct bill, while also citing conflicting issues with the University’s already existing contracts.
