The Houston Cougars return to the Carl Lewis International Complex on Sept. 24 and light up the scoreboard with a thrilling 2-1 comeback over the Iowa State Cyclones.
The Cougars found their spark after halftime, turning a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 comeback victory over Iowa State. After a slow opening 15 minutes, Houston faced an early challenge but answered with a second-half surge that brought the crowd to life.
The opening half was a battle for momentum, with both teams recording just one shot in the first 15 minutes. Houston senior forward Adelhia Ghonda picked up a yellow card, adding an early bump to a tightly contested opening period.
Iowa State broke through in the 18th minute when senior midfielder Lucy Froitzheim headed the ball into the net. Sophomore forward Sophie Forrester and senior defender Erin Hopewell combined to provide the assists, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage.
Houston refused to let the deficit slow their momentum. The Cougars created several opportunities before halftime, including a header that found the net but was later ruled offside, sending Houston into the break still searching for a breakthrough.
Then came the second-half spark Houston had been waiting for. The Cougars came flying forward, repeatedly testing the Iowa State defense and goalkeeper while building chance after chance in search of the equalizer.
The breakthrough arrived in the 68th minute when fifth-year defender Laney Gonzales curled a corner kick directly into the right side of the net for an olimpico goal, leveling the match and sending Houston’s momentum into another gear.
Houston didn’t wait too long to turn the momentum into a lead. Just six minutes later, sophomore forward Bailey Cate found the bottom-right corner with Gonzales providing the assist, completing a thrilling turnaround and putting the Cougars ahead 2-1.
From there, Houston kept pressing forward and finished with 21 shots with nine on target. The Cougars took advantage of Iowa State’s non-aggressive defending in the second half and continued creating chances until the final whistle.
The comeback not only gave the Houston Cougars their first Big 12 victory of the season, but it also pushed their record to 6-1-3. After trailing at the half, Houston flipped the script with a lively second half and walked away with a victory worth celebrating.
The Cougars will keep the home fires burning on Sunday, Sept. 27, welcoming the 5-3-2 Oklahoma State to the Carl Lewis International Complex with hopes of carrying their winning energy into another exciting matchup.
