The Center for Student Involvement celebrated Constitution Day with a lunch featuring political science professor Kelley Littlepage, who gave a presentation to students about voting, voting laws and the Constitution.
The event also included a game of true or false questions surrounding the Constitution, free food and tabling from United Campus Ministries to register students to vote and give out information about the upcoming election.
“I was really intrigued, especially with all the recent changes around everything, what may have changed, and just to stay informed,” said strategic communication senior Sarah Rantala.
Littlepage covered a section of the Constitution in order to provide clarity to students and information pertaining to today. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and answer Littlepage’s questions.
“The Constitution is a document that sort of is the groundwork for federalism,” said business junior Donovan Avila. “There’s still a lot to learn and relearn.”
Littlepage informed the room, after various guesses, that the largest voter fraud majority is minors who aren’t of legal voting age. Many students showed their surprise in response.
“The Constitution still relates today, how it affects everyday lives, laws and then tying that in, especially because this is kind of a midterm election year,” said Center for Student Involvement Leadership and Civic Engagement program manager Erin Guerrero. “You know the importance of voting and why everyone should vote.”
Littlepage ended the presentation by providing information about current shadow docket cases that affect the country’s methods of voting. Shadow docket cases are emergency orders and decisions made by the Supreme Court and aren’t well known to the public.
“In the end, I hope they’re more engaged with wanting to vote,” Littlepage said.
